Verse 4 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 2
English: Confucius said:”When I am fifteen, I aspired to learn. At thirty, I can be independent. At forty, I am not deluded. At fifty, I knew my destiny. At sixty, I knew truth in all I heard. At seventy, I could follow my heart’s desire without overstepping the line.”
This is one of the here.. I quoted that English translation from
Yesterday, I turned 40!!! In Japan, people sometimes quote this teaching when they turned 30,40,50… years old. At 40 , I will be “not deluded.” I am sure that Confucius words are right in one’s life. In my early 30’s , I had been fixed on the idea of what is a good mother/wife or a good person. I had been caught up in I should be. I sometimes stewed and frustrated about what I was.
In getting closer to 40, I realized that I am I. For this coming 10 years, I will live as I am. I am not excited about it. I am feeling very at ease. I have confidence in myself to continue being a good mother/wife from now on. I might not be a perfect mom/wife, but could be good. It must be the real meaning of “not deluded/不惑”
To live naturally will lead me to the next 50’s. The Confucius said ” At fifty, I knew my destiny.” I wish so.
