Do you like a croquette? I love it! It’s a very common menu for a daily supper in Japan, too. Especially, before the paycheck!! I usually season them with soy-sauce,sake,sugar,mirin(cooking wine)and pepper while I’m stir-frying minced beef with pork. I should tell you that in Japan they usually have minced beef with pork. At the supermarket, there are many packs of minced beef with pork with a couple of different sizes, but you can’t find a large pack of beef ONLY. If you want it, you have to ask a shopman to pack it for you. I don’t know why. Maybe, it’s too pricey for daily use for the Japanese. Beef is expensive, so it is supposed to be eaten in a solid shape. Do i make sense? I don’t think so. How should I put this? To mince beef is a big deal for the common Japanese. That’s why the McDonald Japan says “Our patty is made of 100% beef!” loudly. How do you think? Do you make a hamburger with minced beef with pork?
My croquette (Japanese taste)

Oh my gosh thats so strange that you post about croquettes!! I made some last weekend with my neice (who is pretty much the same age as your daughter) She just loved the messy bit too! We made ours with onion and mahed carrot in the middle because we are vegetarian, then we had it with baked beans and a mini tamogoyaki (made from the leftover egg dip!) Shes a really fussy eater but she just looooved the croquettes, I dont think ive seen her eat so much dinner! Shes requested we make them again next week! I think they are her new favourite dinner!
Hi Libby,
I’ve never had a croquette with beans. It sounds yummy! What kind of beans do you use? Do you think I can use soy-beans?
Your niece is now addicted with your croquette! I think the croquette is good menu for kids because you can add many veges sneakily in them. My daughter is a really carbo eater!
We had it with baked beans in tomato sauce – over here they’re in tins and theyre just easy food like we have beans on toast sometimesits quite odd when you think about it! Yes I suppose you could use soy beans the beans we had are haricot beans and they were good with the croquettes because the sauce complimented the potato and tamagoyaki.
The sauce with it tastes like ketchup – have you got ketchup in Japan? Im sure you have, the sauce has tomatoes, sugar, water, some spices like paprika, garlic oil, rapeseed oil and that kind of thing! Although ive never tried to make it from scratch but it is possible since the ingredients are really simple and easy to find (here anyway!)
Yes! When I put the onion in she said she didnt want it but once she tasted it she said “wow I love onion!” haha! although I did chop it nice and small! ^^
>but once she tasted it she said “wow I love onion!” haha! although I did chop it nice and small! ^^
Hahaha~! She’s so cute!
Thanks for the tips for the beans croquette. I looked up ‘haricot beans’ and found that I can get them in Japan, too. I really love sweetened haricot beans paste. You can have it within a Japanese confectionaly.
You know that I love croquettes!
My kryptonite!
I went to Wiki to check up what is ‘kryptonite’!!
They says,
“The word kryptonite is also used in modern speech as a synonym for Achilles’ heel, the one weakness of an otherwise invulnerable hero.”
Ah!! Now I got it! I’ve never seen ‘Superman’ ever!
yummm that looks amazing
Do you want to send me some? Hahaha.
P.S. I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I love it hehe
Just thought I’d say so I don’t seem like a random creepy person or anything.
Hi elephanteaus!
Thanks for reanding my blog.
I visited your site, too. I don’t know much about Takeru Sato, but I think he was playing the Kamen-rider before?
Hello!
And no problem. Thanks for visiting my blog as well! (:
Oh, haha, yeah he was in Kamen-Rider before. He’s also in Bloody Monday and Rookies if you know about those dramas? Hehe. Yes, I do realize I’m a little bit too obsessed.
Ah!
I know these dramas only by name. I know rather better about kid’s TV programs!, hehe
I make croquettes too, I make mine with potatoes, ground beef (minced beef) and sautéed onions. I roll my croquettes in bread or soda cracker crumbs because panko is to expensive here. I never thought of putting other vegetables in with the potatoes because my Mom never did, I’ll have to try a few variations the next time I make them.
AZ,
Now I remember that I sent you those picures of my family AGAIN!! So sorry! I don’t have many picures of myself to show you. I don’t take pictures of myself lesser and lesser than before.
That is interesting about ground beef. as an American you some times forget that some meats like beef aren’t as readily available. Though because my friend thinks beef lacks “Flavor” she prefers to make her croquettes with all ground pork. I’m a very big fan of croquettes maybe because it’s a pretty cheap and good meal for a college student. I enjoy your blog a lot!
Hi Sam,
Thanks for leaving the comment!
Uh, “Flavor” is definitely different. Pork is good for Gyoza!
I may make croquettes more often, because kids begin to eat so much and as you says croquettes can be made very cheap!!
