I saw this display at a nearby hardware store. They stack the bunch of packages up to almost the ceiling.
Which one would you want to pull out? I kept my distance from them. How could you make up if that tower of packages had collapsed by your choice?
It’s a package of kagami-mochi for the new years days.

Crazy display

Hardware store? Selling food?
This sort of display is really common here using Coca-Cola boxes. They are stacked into shapes for that season or upcoming holiday. A ghost made of grey diet Coke boxes for Halloween. A giant turkey for Thanksgiving and right now the nearby grocery store has a Christmas tree and Santa up to the ceiling made of red boxes. No one touches them!! They’re roped off! We just go back to normal drink section to get our Coke!!
In the small town in Japan where I lived a few years ago, the hardware store sold not only food but also alcohol (I always thought this was kind of a bad idea, to mix booze and power tools like that >.<).
Yeah, you can buy almost everything in a hardware store even pets, but they don’t have fresh vegetable or meat. They are called as ‘ホームセンター’.
Oh, ‘Home improvement center’.
I’ve never seen a home improvement store in Arizona selling food, except for cold bottled soft drinks or bottled water. Costco and Sam’s Club, two warehouse stores, always stack boxes like that near the entry doors, right now there is a wall of Christmas paper, decorations, and anything that has to do with Christmas.
Costco is in Japan, too! It’s a huge supermarket, isn’t it? I have been to there only once. They are selling everything in huge packages, in large quantities!! I wanted to get some daily commodities but I don’t have much space to keep them, so I bought just a big whole apple pie, a large bottle of juice, and some picture book in English for kids. Everything was BIG!
I usually buy my short grain rice at Costco in 50 lb bags ($25.49), I then split the bag with my sister. It is much cheaper to buy rice that way, I pay 52¢ a pound, if I buy it at my regular grocery store I have to pay $1 a pound or more. I love rice, I could eat it everyday :0) !
Now how the heck is a customer going to get what they want from that stack? ^_^
I thought the same as you! I think they make a customer away from the products!
I emailed you. I just re-read what I wrote. I’m sorry I’m so scattered in my thoughts. The topic jumps all over the place! I blame academic pressures… I’m going to run away from school and never go back!
No, not really! I like school, just not the end of each term and final exams!
I will take you to the good ramen shop, so hang in there!
Ha ha ha! This looks very similar to the kagami-mochi display I saw yesterday at a Japanese store near my office! I bought one when I saw it, because we just moved to a new house and I wanted something Japanese my wife would like.
Oh, you moved to a new house! Congrats! You can have wonderful Xmas and Oshougatsu!
Yes, we hope to.
We also got Japanese TV here in the US finally, so we can finally watch 紅白.
紅白 in the US!! It’s not so much popular in Japan anymore.
