On the way to Momo’s preschool, we pass by the local sake brewery. Do you like sake? I just socially have sometimes, but I wish I could taste it, and I must be happy to have such a traditional sake brewery near my house.

the Ibaraki shuzo 茨木酒造 in Akashi city Hyogo
These two pictures were taken a week ago, and the rice field in front of the brewery was dug over to prepare for planting rice. However, this morning, I found the baby rice were planted and the field was filled with water. It’s seasonal sight of the rainy season in Japan.

It's done! 田植え完了
This rice is called ‘Yamada Nishiki’ . You know sake is brewed from rice, and average sake can be brewed from normal rice that means the rice we eat for diet, but yamada nishiki is famous for some distinct high quality sake. Moreover, it’s mainly grown in Hyogo(his origin) where is my prefecture! It’s news for me! I found it while I googled about yamada nishiki as I don’t know much about sake. Oh boy, I gotta have it!! I should have its beginning from amazake.
P.S. two and half months later, the rice grew high! →★
Sake… It’s included in my ’shouldn’t drink this’ category. But I would want to try that place’s brew.
Clear alcohol affects me strongly… Maybe it’s my body chemistry? I can drink all the beer, wine, whiskey, cognac, etc I want.
However, things like soju, vodka, and sake are bad news for me. ^_^
I have drunk wine, beer, champagne but I have never ever tried Sake at all. Not that I dont want to try, I do but I dont know which one is good to try for a sake newbie like me ^_^ Any suggestions? Last Saturday I did buy this Umesho – a small bottle but Im not sure how to take it ..should I mix it with something or just drink it as it is but in small doses. The indigenous tribe my grandmother’s from call their Rice Wine – Tuak ..now that just the smell of it is enough to make me go high ^_^ i never tried it ..
Hi Cute,
Get a proper sake set, and chill it for summer or warm it for winter. I like “Takasago Ginga Shizuku”… I’m not sure if it’s in stores near to you. However, it’s really smooth tasting!
> now that just the smell of it is enough to make me go high
I feel that way about all clear alcohol!
Hi Tsukareru
Thank you for the recommendation, I could try and look for it over here, they might have it at the sushi restaurants out here or the Isetan shop.
@ now that just the smell of it is enough to make me go high. I feel the same with Tuak hence I dont think I’d be a good guest if its the Rice Harvest festival of Gawai ^_^ You know I would love to give whiskey another chance but everytime I try ..wait everytime I just sniff the whiskey smell I just cringe ..my fault really, I had a bad experience with whiskey hence it stays. What sort of whiskey is your favorite? my husband drinks Glenfiddich and Bowmore – although secret I do use a wee bit of his whiskey to erm ..marinate the beef or when I make his beef stew just to give it that extra flavor.
Because I’m from Kentucky, I prefer bourbon whiskey! 95% of bourbon whiskey is make here. ‘Maker’s Mark’ is very famous and popular. I like it, but my favorite is ‘Crown Royal’. It’s a blended Canadian whisky… So, I’m a traitor! Hahaha!! I love Coca-Cola, I like to mix Crown & Coke with lots of ice cubes.
^_^ yea thats what my brother does with his whiskey, he mixes with coke as my husband its on the rocks as it is. Maybe one day I’ll give it a try ^_^
Umesho? or Umeshu?
I like Umeshu, plum liquor. I usually mix it with soda. It’s good! According to Sake, Tsukareru knows better than me. I use it for cooking commonly, but never drink.
Umeshu ^_^ sorry my mistake hehe I guess for me, i need to mix it with some fruit juice or something, i cant take any carbonated drinks for the time being. I do use Chinese wine when I cook, depending on what the meal is.
>> According to Sake, Tsukareru knows better than me. I use it for cooking commonly, but never drink.
Oh no…. Your sentence… ミス!
Really? Where? I can’t find it by myself!!
Well, really you should say something like ‘According to so-and-so’ (ie a particular person… “According to Momo, cake is a health food.”) Sake can’t talk.
How about, “With regard to sake and other types of alcohol, Tsukareru knows better than me. I use it commonly for cooking, but I never drink it.”
Oh I see! Thanks for your advice. I didn’t know that.
Did you see? I drank some sake the other night. I should listen to my own advice.
Ah sake. I never drink it myself. Gave up alcohol years ago. This is difficult here in Ireland where people go to pubs and drink Irish beer a lot, but I refuse to drink.
My wife’s family in Japan doesn’t drink either, which is pretty unusual. No special reason, they just choose not to, even my father-in-law.
I did try sake years ago, but I never liked it. Same with plum wine. I also tried Korean shochu once, but that was really strong.
I like learning about all the different kinds of rice in Japan. Years ago, in college, I studied about Tokugawa-Period Japan, and I read somewhere that they had hundreds and hundreds of different types of rice. Amazing how much variety there is.
They say the same type of rice tastes different depend on its growing district. Some people mind very much about its growing district, for example ‘こしひかり’ from ’長野県’. In my opinion, I like ‘あきたこまち’ the most!
