Every morning I have to take Momo to her preschool on foot. I hate to be tanned, so I wear a hat with relatively big brim, and put on the sunscreen make up base and liquid foundation with high sun protection factor. Also, I wear a long sleeves shirt even if it’s hot. Some moms are much more paranoid that they wear gloves, a high neck shirt (or a stole) to hide their neck, and hold a parasol. When they drive, they wear special gloves to prevent their arms from tanning even though almost Japanese cars normally have the sunscreen windows.
The sunshine, especially the ultraviolet rays, causes severe damage to your skin like wrinkles and spots and they emerge when you get elder. I really regret that I did scuba-diving without enough preparation for suntan when I was younger.
Nevertheless, can you wear these hats? I can’t. It’s…weird, aren’t they??

Ok those gloves Ive seen them over here. Women tend to wear those type alot when driving. I, for one, do not like to get tanned either because my skin tone is just the perfect color tone and when it gets tanned I look too dark and I have to make sure that my cosmetics are suitable with the tan I have so yes I dont really like to tan…when I go out especially on holidays at the beach or anywhere I will put my hat on ..i do put on my sunblock with high SPF too. That 1st hat I wish I could have that ..thats the ultimate wide brim hat to have ..my black hat I bought it at ISETAN Singapore
and its still my fav. travels with me everywhere nowadays ..i dont care what people think when I wear my floppy hat at least I am protecting 1. my face 2. my scalp and my hair. Unfortunately here I cant wear long sleeves alot as its very very hot out here…
What make up brand do you wear? *its one of my favorite topic – make up *
I use the Shisei-do Maquillage’s make up base and liquid foundation. They are quite nice! I’m not so much interested in make-up things and I always leave up to the shop girl that is very kind and friendly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWjeS-Gi738
Have you ever use the Japanese cosmetics?
Oh Shiseido is a very well known brand out here and expensive too apart from that its very good too
I’ve once used Kanebo’s eyeshadows which were really nice but thats about it …I use MAC cosmetics.
Americans are still in love with tanning.
We’re more aware of the risks and skin damage, so some people are more careful than others…. But Americans still have the idea in their heads that “tanned skin = healthy person”. When someone is sick, we say thinks like, “Oh, you look so pale!”.
I can’t tan at all, so I had to endure some teasing from middle school age and up. Even now, sometimes!!
Here’s me and some friends at a nighclub; http://tsukareru.wordpress.com/files/2009/06/100_7104.jpg
The difference is clear! Hahaha!!
I don’t do anything daily as damage prevention, but if I go swimming or something I wear a strong sunscreen.
You might be admired in Japan! I don’t care to be tanned if I just turn to brown. I hate when I was tanned, there would be some spots and they never disappear. I put on a little bit darker foundation than my skin color to hide these spots as possible. It doesn’t work well, though…I think it is not only sunshine but also aging!!
> there would be some spots and they never disappear.
Andrew has a similar problem with freckles on his nose, cheeks on his eyelids. His mom could rarely put sunscreen on him. (She tried, but he would sneek away like a wild child. ^_^) He was always a super-tanned kid. I’m sure he has some skin damage, but he’s a guy… I don’t think he cares! ^_^
I am naturally tan, haha. But I always wear sunscreen to help prevent sun damage and *gasp* premature aging! I really think that people, whatever age, should use sunscreen (even on cloudy days).
I’m めんどうくさがり!! How do you say in English? I’m too lazy to take a such kind of daily small, sensitive care!! But I know I have no time to relax from aging!
“めんどうくさがり”?
That’s difficult to explain!!
You’re the type of person find that sort of thing troublesome, or to fall into that sort of habit is troublesome for you.
Sometimes, I wish everyone lived naked and bald!! I sometimes find every clothes, shoes, hats, glasses are troublesome!!
My wife is Japanese and worries about sun too, especially for our two year old daughter. Our daughter has pale skin like me, so I understand why she worries, but I still think she is a bit too cautious.
The gloves are kind of cute, to be honest.
The hats are silly though.
It might be bothersome to put sunscreen on 1 to 3 years kids as they keep moving while you putting on and washing off! Your wife is patient! good mom!
When I was young and growing up in Florida, I was always tanned…and I wasn’t careful to protect my skin.
As I got older, I realized that was foolish. I prefer having lighter skin now…and try to protect it—especially in summer—with sunscreen and always wear a baseball hat.
My wife and I make sure my children always use sunscreen too.
In our childhood, no one cared! Instead we were supposed to be tanned in summer to be stronger and healtier. You have three girls so they must be more conscious of their skin care by themselves all in good time. ;D
wow, seriously it seems too much. haha.
I am swimming almost three times a day.
All my friends love tanning.
When I visited Japan awhile ago, I saw “arm gloves?” at stores. I didn’t know what is this strange socks-like staff, and asked the sales person. I thought it’s for legs, I mean socks.
You guys don’t worry about getting wet in the gloves? Because I got tired of super muggy weather during I was in Japan.
Once I got out of the hotel, my body became sticky, you know.
anyway, it was nice post! Thanks, and nice to meet you.
Hi ei,
Nice to meet you, too!
>I am swimming almost three times a day.
Amazing! Are you a swimmer? haha
>You guys don’t worry about getting wet in the gloves?
Yeah, I admire them as they are so patient. I’d never tried it ever.
Thank you for visiting, and feel free to leave your comment!
Hi!,
What an interesting conversation. I am from Ecuador, and as a latino, I am naturally tan. I do take care of my skin just because I know its good to protect it with sunscreen and to avoid wrinkles, but even when I wear sunscreen I still tan. I do not have any freckles though.
When I was younger I wanted to be very pale, like a barbie doll, but I love my skin now, I am happy with my light brown skin
But seriously, a little bit of sun is not bad. We need sun to produce vitamin D, which is very important! My mom hates getting sunpots in her hands from driving in the strong Ecuadorian sun, maybe I can get her those gloves!!!
